Positive Material Identification

Positive Material Identification (PMI) is the identification and analysis of various metal alloys by their chemical composition through nondestructive methods, by reading the quantities by percentage of its constituent elements.

Typical methods for PMI include X-ray fluorescence (XRF) and optical emission spectrometry (OES). PMI can be conducted on-site or in the laboratory.

PMI is useful to test part of an assembly or that which is too large for shipping, to test materials in which a sample cannot be cut for routine testing because they are too costly to destroy, to test a lot suspected to be mixed or when material identification / documentation has been misplaced.
